Stories: Changing lives,
different thinking, and supportive companions.
The last year or so has had an impact on the staff with FACES and those we serve. Some
interesting notes include:
- Nearly one third of our participants now are individuals under 21; several having come to us from
institutional settings; there are also adults from hospitals. for all of them, and us, we have had exciting times
learning how to acclimate to one another and the needed supports for life in the community.
- Several adolescents with Autism spectrum disorders have come to
be served by LSG Companions. We have helped them access additional specialized services for folks with ASD,
perhaps unavailable to them in the past, as well as participate in the communities where they live.
-
Several of our Participants have been able to obtain jobs in restaurants, in movie theaters and beauty salons.
Others are going to school, learning with other students from their neighborhoods, riding the bus and being involved.
-
Some have been on vacation to the mountains, to Disney World, or the beach. Still others are going to concerts, hockey games and
attending a Braves game at Turner Field.
-
Notably, it is difficult to notice Participants; they appear as groups of friends or family members together
enjoying each other and the stuff they're doing.
These are but small
examples of how a change of thinking and intentional steps by staff and Companions
sharing living in typical ways, do make a difference in peoples lives. Now
you notice their faces and begin to wonder, how else are we alike?
Opportunities – we are
seeking individuals and families who are interested in being trained and
approved to provide support and companionship to individuals with
developmental disabilities. Typically our participants would share your
home where they would be the only person served and thus would be the sole
focus of the work. Currently we are serving a variety of folks with various
challenges. Participants will usually be involved in activities through the day,
whether that is school, a day service or other meaningful vocational or avocational activities. If your home
is wheel chair accessible, you have medical training or experience, have experience or training in mental health or
behavioral supports, or have a Support Companion who is a male role model in the home, or in some particular areas of the state,
you may be especially interesting to us.
Our offices in Atlanta, Athens,
Albany, Rome, and Savannah are expanding services into the MHDDAD regions
in which these cities are located. If you are interested in
pursuing this challenging and rewarding lifestyle, we want to hear from you.
