Supporting Refugee Services

Refugee Services Supply Drive
The Refugee Services Department is conducting a drive to replenish our warehouses.  When each refugee family arrives in Atlanta, we provide them with a fully furnished apartment, and our warehouses our currently empty.  In the next two months, we expect to resettle more than 100 people, and we are in desperate need of new or gently used items to furnish these apartments.  Attached is a list of what we need for every apartment.  For information on making donations or holding a drive at your home congregation, please contact Lorraine Dorough, 678-686-9613 or ldorough@lsga.org.

My Amazon.com Wish List Refugees needs met with a "wish list" operating much like a bridal gift registry. Give it a try and help our Refugee Services outfit apartments.

Volunteer Positions for Refugee Employment Program

  • Interviewer - an individual who will conduct videotaped mock professional job interviews with Refugee Employment Upgrade clients. After interviews are completed, interviewer and client will review the taped interview and critique client on interview technique. Time commitment: Once or twice per month for 8 hours a day. Times are flexible.
  • Resume/Cover letters - An individual to review, edit and critique Professional Upgrade Client resumes and cover letters. Time commitment: LSG would like to schedule one night every two weeks devoted to this process. All sessions will be appointment-based and can be scheduled according to volunteer's availability.
  • Job Group Guests Speakers - We are looking for individuals from a wide range of employment backgrounds, including doctors, nurses, teachers, secretaries, social workers, etc. These individuals will be guest speakers at round table employment discussions covering such topics as: new trends in the field, networking opportunities, educational opportunities, etc. Time commitment: At least 4 hours per month.

Refugee Employment Program Needs Placement Positions
As the economy continues to downsize, we are having more difficulty finding good employment opportunities for refugees. If you know of any employment positions in the metro Atlanta area, please call Obaid Rasoul at (404)298-8817 or (404)298-8834. All types of positions are needed, especially those not requiring great technical skills or strong English. Our experience has shown that refugees, by and large, make excellent employees. They are eager to learn, work hard, are punctual, and committed. Most refugees need public transportation, though some own cars.

Used cars, trucks and vans for Refugee Resettlement
If you have a car, truck or van that is in good working condition and you no longer need it, consider donating your vehicle to the Refugee Resettlement program of Lutheran Services of Georgia.  It’s not easy to live and work in metro Atlanta without a car, so your vehicle will be given directly to a refugee family, providing them with much-needed transportation to get to work, to school, to the store – all of the places we drive to without a second thought about how to get there from our home.  You will receive a tax receipt for your donation!

Supporting our Children and Family Programs

Foster Care needs "Welcome Baskets"
Baskets are given to the foster parents of new babies and include items such as: diapers, layettes, powder, baby soap, bottles, wet wipes, and disposable cameras.

Foster Care Clothing Closet in Norcross
"Gently used” (good condition with no tears, stains, or signs of wear) clothing for children – preschool through teens – is needed for the Clothing Closet for Foster Parents and Foster Children, sponsored by Christ the King Lutheran Church in Norcross.  Most children come to foster homes with nothing except what they are wearing, and foster parents receive only a small allotment per child from the county for clothing.

  • Special Needs Foster Care
The children in our Special Needs Foster Care program are in need of the following items: simple learning toys, picture books, games, radios, tape players and children's music tapes, computers, and educational computer games. We also need high chairs, strollers, car seats, baby beds and monitors.
  • Foster families with HIV and AIDS children
Foster families with HIV and AIDS children need the following items. (Please note that these items are not reimbursable by the Dept. of Family and Children Services.)
    • Depends - Adult bed size
    • Disposable diapers - sizes 1 through 4
    • Latex gloves - size large
    • Hand sanitizing soap
    • CPR Mask - adult and infant sizes
